Professor Nils Hoppe

Nils is the professor of law and ethics in the life sciences at the University of Hannover. After graduating in law, with a specialisation in medical law and human rights law, Nils first worked in insurance litigation at Browne Jacobson LLP, and later as in-house counsel at a university hospital.

He has been an ethics expert to the European Commission since 2008, advises various governments on novel health technologies and governance frameworks, and served on the UK Biobank Ethics and Governance Council from 2014-2018. Nils has advised biobanks, large-scale research clusters, and clinical trials with a particular focus on research governance, consent aspects, and cross-border issues. He also provides advice on ethical issues in biomedical research and innovation, and has assisted in tricky applications to research ethics committees, animal welfare committees, and institutional review boards.

Nils took his undergraduate degree (LL.B.) at Nottingham Law School, and a certificate in European technology and business law from Erlangen. He was awarded a doctorate in law, with a thesis on biotechnology law (magna cum laude), from Hannover Law School. He also holds a qualification in international arbitration, and trained as a barrister (but has not been called to the Bar). He was a consultant lawyer at Hill Dickinson LLP until founding Lawford Davies & Co with James.
